Every quarter, we’re going to be featuring a brief story about a customer — someone whose family, farm or business has grown thanks in part to the financial backing of First Nebraska Bank. Because we’re all about growth, and it all starts with a seed. That’s why the seed is our symbol and our promise to you.
“The bank worked hard to understand our business. That gave them confidence in us as a borrower, and in the process they became important business advisors to us.” — Bill Abbott, Pole Maintenance Company, LLC
Bill Abbott has been relying on First Nebraska Bank ever since another bank decided his business wasn’t worth their time. That was more than 30 years ago, back when First Nebraska Bank’s Columbus branch was known as Platte Valley National Bank. Back then, Bill started with nothing but a bank loan and a vision to provide wood pole inspection, treatment and restoration services to the electric and telecom industries.
Since then, Bill has grown his business, Pole Maintenance Company, LLC, into a thriving enterprise, eventually selling it in 2010 to Georgia-based Osmose Utilities Services, Inc., a leading national provider of inspection, maintenance and rehabilitation solutions for telecom and electric utility infrastructure.
Bill Abbott stuck with First Nebraska Bank all those years because, in his words, “The bank worked hard to understand our business. That gave them confidence in us as a borrower, and in the process they became important business advisors to us.”
Bill continued his praise for the bank, saying, “I have come to realize over the last three decades how careful First Nebraska Bank has been to make sure I didn’t overextend myself as a borrower. I always was able to borrow enough money, but never too much.
“I am impressed with how competent the loan officers are in underwriting and understanding the risks associated with my accounts,” Abbott said.
Since selling Pole Maintenance Company, Bill has gone on to achieve success with a number of other ventures, including Stuart Cromwell Trailer Sales, The Sawle Mill, Inc., and Copper Care Wood Preservatives, Inc.
As with any business, Pole Maintenance Company was able to grow and thrive, thanks to a seed and constant, reliable nurturing. Considering how successful Bill Abbott’s company became, people at that other bank should be kicking themselves. Then again, at First Nebraska Bank, we’ve always prided ourselves on having an eye for talent.
